TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Team Day at the Bay

After losing their mother to colon cancer in August 2008, Lauren and Mike Redmond knew they wanted to do something positive to help others in the fight against colon cancer. When finding the Colon Cancer Challenge website they were excited to learn more about the event. They quickly spread the word to friends and family and were overjoyed by the team that had quickly been formed. Their team is called Day at the Bay in remembrance of Patricia Redmond and her many carefree and peaceful days at the bayside beach in Breezy Point, New York.

On race day, each team member wore a blue shirt with a sketch of a beach scene created by one of Pat’s former students. Lauren and Mike looked around knowing that this was it—The Colon Cancer Challenge was just what they had been looking for to bring everyone together for a special moment. Tears, laughter, hugs, and stories were shared while walking and running around Central Park. Over 100 team members of team Day at the Bay celebrated their first of many years together, not only for Pat, but to make strides in the fight for this important cause.

One of Pat’s favorite quotes was an Irish blessing that states, “Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others cannot keep it from themselves.” It was easy to feel the sunshine that Pat brought to all and even easier to see the true happiness she felt through her smile every day. Each team member of Day at the Bay was able to feel that sunshine in their hearts when crossing the finish line. They look forward to another amazing day this year.
