Team Tony #33 poses in Central Park at the 2008 Colon Cancer Challenge
|
TEAM SPOTLIGHT: Team Tony #33
Team Tony #33 has participated in the Colon Cancer Challenge since 2005.
Team members have been challenged by colon cancer since team leader, MaryJo Trusso-Sabbers,
father "Tony" was diagnosed in 1996 and passed in 1998 from the disease.
MaryJo formed a team in his memory to pay homage and respect for his courageous battle.
The "#33" in the team name represents Tony’s badge number which he wore proudly as a police officer.
Each year family and friends gather in Central Park to share with others as we remember
those who have passed or are currently undergoing treatment and show support for
those who are committed to research. Team Tony #33 proudly wear their shirts, hold signs,
and walk/run as one to unite for this challenge.
As the Library Media Specialist for Dickinson High School,
located on the hilltop of Jersey City,
MaryJo has also created innovative ways to include students in this challenge.
Over the years, the school has really come together for the cause.
One year they raffled off a basket of chocolate, the next they held a "Pizza with your Peers"
fundraiser and last year the school participated in "Caps for the Cure.”
Students were permitted to wear their caps in the building with a donation.
Every student who donated had their name entered in a drawing to win movie tickets
and the staff who donated entered for a chance to win a $50.00 gas card.
The school raised nearly $600.00 during an extended home room period of 90 minutes.
What makes the sum truly remarkable is most Dickinson High School students are economically disadvantaged.
