TEAM SPOTLIGHT: WOCN Team
Founded in 1968, the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society (WOCN) is a professional, international nursing society
of more than 4,200 healthcare professionals who are experts in the care of patients with wound, ostomy and incontinence.
Wound, ostomy and continence (WOC) Nurses practice in a variety of settings
(e.g., hospitals, nursing homes and home care) and offer a wealth of technical assistance,
comfort and support to patients and their families. They are educated in the best evidence-based practice
to address the physical, emotional and social issues of patients with ostomies, stomas, acute and chronic wounds,
as well as urinary and fecal incontinence.
Through education, hands on patient care, and support the WOC nurse helps to prevent or address complications,
promote healing and improve long term outcomes for patients and families.
WOC nurses are knowledgeable in disease prevention and management,
including prevention and early detection of colon cancer and other diseases.
The Metro New York Affiliate of WOCN comprises approximately 65 members from the New York City boroughs,
Long Island and Westchester County.
Mary Brennan, of the North Shore Health System is the president of the NY Metro WOCN group
and Vashti Livingston, of MSKCC, is the Vice-President this affiliate and team leader
for the Colo-Rectal Cancer Challenge.
Metro New York WOCN is an affiliate of the Northeast Region (NER) of WOCN.
The NER of WOCN is comprised of nine affiliates with greater than 500 members in New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
Metro NY, the NER, and WOCN are proud to support the 2010 CRC Challenge.
